Starting today, I’m going to be doing a weekly post sharing my pick of new vinyl releases for that week. I’ll also be hoying in a weekly DJ mix of my choice to get you firing on all cylinders after a busy working week.
To get the ball rolling, I’ve turned to the righteous John Zahl (JAZ) to gently lure you out of any post festive slumber. Yes, I shit you not, this guy is a full-time Episcopalian Minister during daylight hours, while by night he can be found knocking out some deep disco groove in his native US. ‘JAZ’ has a wide range of musical influences from american jazz, new wave, hip-hop, funk, Italian boogie and disco.
His latest release the self-entitled ‘JAZ’ EP on Rotating Soul’s Records, features an eclectic mix of tracks highlighting his varied musical background. I’m sure you’d agree, Its rare when the majority tracks on a record you’ve just listened to sound on the money. In fact you’re usually lucky to get two tracks that cut the mustard. not the case here, the ‘JAZ’ EP delivers some absolute disco gems. My stand out tracks on the on record are ‘Beatrice Beat’ and Cranmer’s Beat’, both synth heavy, with a simple deep groove. For those of a new wave persuasion, ‘I Can’t Dance’ epitomises this sound with a great electronic 80’s vibe and slick vocal, whilst still managing to sound very fresh!
Have a listen to all 6 tracks on the record below;
To get your paws on this head across to Juno RecordS where its available now on limited 12inch vinyl. For more info on this talented jock come clergyman you can visit the Rotating Souls Records Facebook page. I would also recommend a read of this JAZ interview from Viva Radio blog back in 2012, where he talks a bit more about the effect moving to Europe had on his musical tastes.
Moving on, my first mix choice of the week comes one of Italy’s finest exports, LTJ Xperience (Luca Trevisi). I mentioned Luca in last months blog on Bologna DJ ‘Riccio’ and he has a similar style to his fellow countryman when it comes to spinning records. LTJ was one of the first Italian DJ’s to play House Music and his live sets/mixes tend to be littered with disco and jazz re-edits, taking in influences from rare groove, acid jazz and US & UK disco heavyweights such as DJ Harvey.
This mini-mix for ‘Z Nuremberg Radio’ has a selection of great tracks from LTJ, including some of his own productions. Its made my daily commute to work a joy this week, so get it downloaded. Enjoy!
