Over the past week I’ve paid numerous visits to sonar.es, I’m not sure know why I keep doing this as it’s just making me cheesed off that I will not be venturing to the Catalan capital today. It’s actually been 6 years since I last visited the festival and if I’m being completely honest I’ve not felt a huge pull to return, until now. With Dj Harvey booked to play in Sonar Village along with an impressive roster of off-sonar parties (Patrice Scott at Le Terazza on the Sunday sticks out) I’m getting an overwhelming urge to jump on flight.
Apart from Sonar being one of few entirely city based music festivals, it’s also a multimedia/arts showcase and in my opinion the images associated with the festival often fail to get the same level of coverage and recognition as their musical counterparts. With long standing corporate sponsors such Adidas, Pioneer and Budweiser, there is certainly a far larger budget available to the organisers than many of its emerging competitors. However, despite Sonars high profile it still manages to deliver unique and avant-garde multi-media that you may associate with a more exclusive left-field event. Their attention to detail whether it be the artwork, photography, sound, or even the logistics of the festival are all collective factors in its longevity and probably most importantly its credibility.
Here are some of my favourite official Sonar images since it beginnings in 1994, and if you’re attending this year, enjoy. I’m sure it will be as good as ever (says through gritted teeth).
