Does anyone recall Premiere Magazine? For those who need a reminder? it was a monthly New York film editorial that ran for two decades between 1987 and 2007 featuring reviews, advertisements and interviews on anything and everything cinema.
Personally, Premiere was never a publication I paid much attention too and over its 20 year lifespan I only picked it up maybe a handful of times. However, I recently came across some early editions (care of a north wales charity shop) dating back to 87/88 and what grabbed my attention was the magazines press shots of now established. yet ageing actors looking particularly wet behind the ears.
Here are a few that stood out;
As well as Premiere’s film and cinema content, they dedicated some serious print advertising to major global apparel and footwear brands. This big-brand marketing was prevalent throughout the magazines history and a great example is this ace U.B.U Reebok double page ad below.
Now a distant memory, tobacco print ads were given full page coverage back in the 80s. It’s amazing to think of mammoth changes to advertising laws in the 27 years since these supplements first went to print. Thankfully we all (in the loosest sense of the word) now know smoking ain’t really all that cool or clever. Still, you cannot deny the advert below featuring suave, tab smoking, belts and braces city dwellers is, well … cool and clever. I mean if I’d have clocked these ads as an impressionable 80s teenager, I’d have been straight down the local newsagents, begging the fat lass from year 10 to trot in and buy me 20 B&H in exchange for a curly wurly and a quick fumble behind the bus stop.
That under no circumstances happened in real life by the way ….
