Christmas is done and dusted, New Year is upon us and the winter sales are now in full swing. Ok, so it’s in hope rather than expectation that you’ll be able to shoehorn yourself into that medium following a week of gorging on Turkey leftovers, but don’t fret, those festive folk over at The Great Divide have plenty of sizes to choose from in their AW14 sale.
Having had the chance to cast my finest bargain brain over their current reductions, here’s my favourite five from one of 2014’s leading independent retailers.
1. Sandqvist Hans Backpack
My love for Sandqvist is pretty much unconditional, they could knock out a bag with Tomas Brolin’s massive dish on the back and I’d probably still do my best to argue it was ‘on-trend’. Simple, functional and stylish, this Han’s backpack is constructed from durable cordura and features brown leather tooling straps, zipped pocket on the outer flap and a padded 15” inside sleeve for those of you who got a shinny new Laptop from the big man.
2. Gitman Vintage Portuguese Flannel Dot Shirt
Those bigwigs of the buttoned down flannel shirt Gitman Vintage are back with the Portuguese Dot. Expect a cotton flannel construction, white chalk buttons, a single chest pocket and the rear locker loop that has become a standard feature over the years.
3 .Universal Works Mil Parka
Featured on the blog back in November and my jacket of choice for this winter, the Universal Works Mil Parka is constructed from a 100% cotton twill and includes a drawstring hood, waist and fishtail hem (which is what makes a parka, a parka in my opinion). Although arguably the best bit about the jacket is its warmth, with a polyester/shearing lining that means it’s snugger than Linford Christie’s crown jewels.
4. Hill-Side Wool Blend Blanket Stripe Scarf
Brooklyn based ‘The Hillside’ established themselves in 2009 with a vision to manufacturing contemporary neckwear for the American gent. Since their inception the brand has grown substantially and now has stockists everywhere from NYC to Tokyo. We’re right into their Blanket Stripe Scarf with it’s Tan/Navy/Rust wool blend that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Edwin Labour Shirt we did a write up on back in August.
5. Carhartt Monroe Jacket
Michigan’s workwear wizards Carhartt have kindly brought us the Monroe Jacket for AW14, which is their take on the classic bomber with a few contemporary tweaks thrown in for good measure. Characteristic’s include an 9oz cotton Bedford outer, nylon quilted lining and detachable element eclipsing pile collar.
